A lack of local energy storage systems means electric cars could cause brownouts, believes John Ord, head of thermal power and energy at MWH, now part of Stantec.

Speaking exclusively to New Civil Engineer, John Ord explained that without sufficient storage systems at a local level, such as batteries, the electricity grid may not be able to cope with a surge in demand caused by electric car charging.

Brownouts may occur as a result, meaning periods of low voltage could dim the lights in people’s homes.
