Shetland Repower

The primary source of electricity supplied to homes and businesses in Shetland is provided by the existing Lerwick Power Station. The existing Power Station is reaching the end of its life and is forecast to close in 2016. Before this happens it is essential a new power station is in place to provide a base load to Shetland. MWH, now part of Stantec, was commissioned to assist the client in the design of a replacement power station fuelled either by Light Fuel Oil, Natural Gas or a combination of both.

MWH was awarded the contract for options evaluation, selection and conceptual design of a new 120 MW thermal power station approximately 2km north of the existing facility. Included within MWH’s scope is heat recovery including options to connect to Lerwick’s existing district heating system. MWH also considered the Organic Rankine Cycle.
